According to the results of the fourth public opinion poll, experts of the Institute have drawn the following conclusions:

1. Ukrainian middle class is in embryonic condition.
Only 8,9% of Ukrainians can be referred to as middle class by the objective characteristics (financial condition, occupation, education). At the same time one third of Ukraine refers themselves to the middle class.

2. The middle class in Ukraine is divided into two groups: old and new.
The basis of such division is different attitude to the property. An “old middle class” includes entrepreneurs, businessmen who own the means of production. They make a bit less than a half of all middle class in Ukraine. A “new middle class” consists of highly paid employees, bearers of cultural capital.

3. The middle class in Ukraine is not a separate social class; it doesn’t take part in political parties, public organizations actively.

4. Ukrainian middle class doesn’t vote for the political projects which are created especially to be supported by the middle class.

About two thirds of the middle class would vote for the Party of Regions, one fifth – for the Bloc of Yulia Timoshenko, 6,7% - for the “Our Ukraine”, 3,4% - for the “People’s self-defense”. The support of “Viche” (political party which actively declared the protection of rights of the middle class) by the middle class itself tends to zero.
